How these figures are calculated
What is counted
One unique obituary listing on the official funeral home's website. When several funeral homes share the same obituary website, they're grouped together and each obituary is counted once within that group.
Confirmed versus estimated dates
Confirmed dates come from explicit official-site evidence. If the official website contains conflicting dates, the collector can choose a documented best estimate, but the date remains unconfirmed. You can choose to include or exclude these estimates using the filter above.
What is not measured
These numbers are not verified funeral contracts, at-need calls, revenue, or the actual market share for all funeral providers. Some deaths may never receive an obituary, and some families may publish more than once across providers.
Forecasts, growth and illustrative uncertainty
End-of-month and end-of-year scenarios use observed dates of death and a selected 30-, 60- or 90-day activity rate. Sites without a recent, adequate baseline are excluded and clearly identified. The low/high range reflects a simple ±25% change to the projected remaining activity, not a statistical confidence interval. Scanner delays, uneven archives, recent backfills, publication lags and partial weeks can cause large errors; these figures are not forecasts of funeral calls or contracts.
Area and period comparisons
Area presets select funeral-home website groups based on their principal listed locations. If a website also covers outlying branches, its full website count remains together; this is not a geographically filtered death count. Weekly periods begin on Monday, and calendar-year totals count only dates within the selected year. A year-over-year comparison for the current year uses the same elapsed calendar dates in both years.
Busiest days, weekends and TFSG grouping
The Busiest Days & Weekends view uses official obituary death dates, not call-received timestamps. Weekends always mean Saturday–Sunday, and weeks begin Monday. Selected websites can be combined for analysis, but the same person may appear on multiple websites. TFSG comparison groups are current affiliations applied retrospectively and do not imply past ownership.
Archive history and incomplete dates
Historical coverage differs by website. Some backfills are still running or have failed, and a missing source is not a zero. Records with unknown death dates remain included in the site's lifetime total but cannot be assigned to an individual day, week, month or year. The current month and year may be incomplete.
